At Least I Was Consistent

I shot the same thing on both the front and back nine. Was that good?? It wasn’t awful but I was so trying to do better.

Lately, I find I’m shanking the ball way too much. Mostly on short, finesse chips, I’m totally missing the ground and sending the ball sailing. That is about the most frustrating thing…especially since my practice shot is perfect!

I did have a few nice pars and the Par 3’s were good to me today…pars and bogeys are OK. I’m still a work in progress. What can I say?? :)

Tomorrow I’m playing with a friend at a nine-hole course. It should be fun, if we get to play. Rain is in the forecast and it’s been cloudy since yesterday. It did rain on us a bit today…but just a spitting rain. If it does that tomorrow, it’ll be OK. I won’t play in the rain…so we’ll see what tomorrow brings. We need it badly, but I don’t want it to interfere with my golf :)

LAW 16: “Nice lag” can usually be translated to “lousy putt.” Similarly, “tough break” can usually be translated “way to miss an easy one, sucker.”

The boys screwed up last night. They lost to the Phillies, so now they’re (the Phils) 1/2 game in first place. They, the Mets, have got to win the next two!!

Another Opportunity Missed :(

Well…I wasn’t awful, but I wasn’t good either. Several pars saved me but for the most part, I didn’t do as well as I should have.

Once I remembered to keep my left elbow straight instead of letting it break of the swing, I started hitting the ball betters…however it wasn’t better enough.

The thing that killed me (and saved me as well several times) was my chipping. I’m still trying to get used to using my lob wedge and sand wedge in places other than the sand. Form about 60 yards or so out, sand wedge. 30 or so - lob wedge. Not sure I need a gap wedge - yet. Still trying to use these clubs to get a ball with a bit of spin so it’ll stop on the green and not roll off the other end.

I was neither the statue or the bird today…just an observer. So again…we’ll see. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are rife with more opportunities. We shall see.

I know things will be better when my AC is fixed. It broke last Thursday and they’re coming today (one hopes) to fix it. I have mixed emotions about it. I want it fixed, but I also would like it to be dead so we need a new one. This is a builder’s grade piece of crap. It never gets really cold and never gets really warm…and it’s so inefficient, it costs us a fortune to be cold in the winter and hot in the summer. So…we’ll see.

Also part of the reason I didn’t excel today. When you sleep in the heat, you wake up not feeling refreshed.

Seems we’re losing ground. We’re only 1/2 game in first place behiond the Phillies. We won like 8 or 9 in a row, but I guess they did too. Then we’ve lost 2 in a row. Time is getting short!

What an Interesting Day!

We played the front nine twice (for the last time this year - YIPEE). Two different people showed up to play each nine.

Confused? No more than I.

We started on hole #8. For the entire round the first time through, I either parred or bogeyed the hole. I ended up with the best 9 hole score I’ve ever had. Then the real me showed up and everything changed.

I shot 12 strokes worse the second time around because the old me was here. I liked the new me a whole lot better.

I still broke 100, which I was happy for, but had I shot 7 strokes less, I could have broken 90. That is my goal for this year, but since I’ve had a crummy year health-wise, that may or may not happen.

The biggest thing I need to do is to gain some consistency. Nothing brought that home more succinctly than the disparity in the two nine-hole rounds. I don’t know if I psyched myself out by playing so well on the first nine or not…but boy was that end result frustrating!

But…it did show me I had it in me to do it, so i just have to do better…next time :)

LAW 14: Golf balls from the same “sleeve” tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water (see Law three)

We’re one and a half games in first place and we beat Atlanta. Hot Dig!!

Too much Sand!

No….I’m not talking about bunkers, although I did spend a little quality time in them today :(

We played the front nine twice as they’re aerating the back nine this week. When they aerate the greens, they sand them - not the nice fluffy, tiny stuff… these are monster grains of sand (by comparison). Of course, when they aerate, they also over water, so, putting is a challenge…not only is it very wet, it’s got this sand on it (it’s probably actually a fertilizer, but it looks like sandy stuff).

I sucked the big one again today. I did manage one saving grace - a birdie on #9 the second time around (which was the 18th hole). I managed not to screw up my 3 1/2 foot putt.

Not only that, I got some great information that helped me fix some of the issues I was having last week. I was topping the ball horribly, but I didn’t feel I was raising up or peeking. It seems I must have been doing the same thing my friend was doing…collapsing my left arm. When I started thinking about it and keeping it straight, I started to consistently hit the ball much better.

So, getting a tip that helped me hit better and getting a birdie on the last hole helped to insure I would return for another try. I can hold off on giving up golf for bocce or shuffleboard (although I do like bocce, but I don’t see me playing it as much as I do golf!). :)

So Wednesday, I have another change to excel at conquering the front nine. I do hope I’m more successful than I was today!

LAW 13: All 3-woods are demon-possessed.

The Mets are in first place, 2 games ahead of the Phillies. Atlanta is coming to Shea tomorrow for a three-game series. They’re 12 games out of first :) That makes me almost as happy as the Mets being in first place does.

Sometimes…

Yes…Sometimes you’re the bird and sometimes you’re the statue. Wanna venture to guess what I was today?? Yupper…you got it!! I was the statue. As well as I played Wednesday, I did just that poorly today. In fact, I did so bad, I was ready to quit on the third hole and not encumber the other 3 ladies in my foursome. Only reaason I didn’t (although I offered several other times during the round) was that I’m really not a quitter.

Murphy was on my shoulder the entire round. The only thing I didn’t mess up too badly were my drives. I couldn’t hit any other club today. I spent mucho time at the beach and managed to loose 2 sleeves of balls (for the uninformed, that’s 6…yes count ‘em - 6). Oh yeah….did I keep my head down on any shot today? Not on your life. I topped so many balls today, I’m not sure why they still have their covers on. I don’t know what else I can say. Today I sucked the big one and I have bird crap all over me! :-(

LAW 12: A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent — or some similar combination.

Holding my breath, the Mets are in first place by 1 game. Of course, playing the poor, hapless Washington Nationals helped them win 3 straight, and LA beating the Phillies helped, but now we need to really rally. They’re playing Pittsburgh over the weekend and they’re near the bottom of the Central division. This is always a good thing, but realizing that any team can beat any other team on any given day, I will continue to keep my fingers and toes crossed that they continue this winning streak!

Ah…Another Day on the Course!

It really doesn’t get any better than this. I finally broke 100 again, even though we played the back nine twice again. I almost had the same score as I had on Monday.

It was a pleasant day, although you could feel the humidity more today than in the past week. It was still nice to be out there on a decent day in August.

Of course, I made some idiotic errors…mistakes I shouldn’t be making. I find I’m peeking more and more which is definitely not a good thing! I’ll have to be more conscientious about keeping my head down until after I’ve hit the ball.

I lost 3 balls again today. It’s starting to really piss me off. It’s so idiotic to do that….yet another thing I have to concentrate on!

Played with 3 good folks, so it was a pleasant day!! We’ll see how I do next Monday when we play the front nine twice :-(

LAW 11: Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse.

My poor struggling Mets are still a game out of first place, with the Phillies holding the top spot! :(  I sure hope they have enough juice to sprint at the end of the season, which is quickly approaching!

Fall Has Come Early!

What a gorgeous day! Temps in the 70s, no humidity. What a glorious day to be out on the golf course.

We had to play the back nine twice because they are aereating the front nine. I explained what that was back on 23 June if you want to read about it and see the pictures :)

So…we all like the back nine best…it’s pretty and it’s a bit easier. I started off great with a bogey and a par (on my least favorite hole on the course). Then it all went to hell in a handbasket. I got lazy and stupid…and blew 4 holes in a row. Then, I redeemed myself for the last 3 getting 2 pars and another bogey. I ended the first go-round with a decent score. Those pars saved me…it could have been very ugly.

So now, the goal is to do better on each hole than what you did on the first try.  Well, I only did that on 3 of the 9 holes…all the others were worse. Seems I got stupid again. I had a good opportunity to break 100, but I just missed doing it.

We get to try it again on Wednesday.

Next week, however, will be the real challenge. We’ll get to play the front nine twice while they aereate the back nine. It’s harder since more of the tougher holes are on the front. The good news is if you do well, you really feel like you’ve accomplished something. So…we’ll see.

Bush League

I get Golfstyles Washington magazine. I read this article in the current issue and, although this is not a political blog, it is a golf blog…and this just slapped me upside the head. I won’t judge, but those of you who know me know how I feel about this man…in no uncertain terms. To me, this is just another nail in his proverbial coffin and yet another footnote to his long and very uselessly painful legacy.

It’s been nearly half a century since John F. Kennedy worried that it was impolitic to be photographed playing golf. The world was simmering while the president was playing. Never mind the time spent on the yacht or the staged fun at Cape Cod – golf was, and still is, politically speaking, the idle pursuit of the elites,  (though who can imagine Barack Obama being anything but a hopeless chop?).

Today, despite Tiger, legions of beer-swilling spectators, and facts that indicate otherwise, golf is still an upper crust caricature when politically convenient. So it was with little fanfare that President Bush quit the game a few months after the Iraq war started in 2003. On the day he says he quit, he was mid-round when the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad was bombed.

The media was, of course, aghast that the president was playing while the world was simmering. Media hypocrisy is redundant, but it is irrefutable that young American men and women were being killed while the president played golf.

Only recently did the president explain his decision, telling the Web site Politico, “I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best I can with them and I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.

“I remember when Sergio de Mello (the top U.N. official in Iraq) got killed in Baghdad as a result of these murderers taking this good man’s life,” Bush continued. “I was playing golf – I think I was in central Texas – and they pulled me off the golf course and I said, ‘It’s just not worth it anymore to do.’”

Ironically, those comments mirror the war precisely: half-assed and not very well thought out.

First, why was it an official’s death in a war zone that prompted the decision rather than the “good men” of the United States military who were being killed as “a result of these “murderers?”

If it was hollow symbolism Bush was seeking, the time to quit was after nearly 3,000 Americans died on Sept. 11, 2001. Instead, it sounds more like Karl Rove was bored one day and figured the idea might earn a few votes.

Second, how is playing golf any different than looking like a doofus tootling around on a mountain bike? Or clearing brush on an expansive Texas ranch while on yet another vacation?

Third, Bush’s reasoning is an insult to the families of American soldiers. Those families don’t give a bleep if the president is golfing, riding a bike or playing “Risk” with Donald Rumsfeld when their loved ones are taken forever in one incendiary moment. Americans, by and large, don’t begrudge the president seeking an occasional escape from his job.

So why did Bush pick golf as his faux sacrifice for the troops? By publicizing the utterly inane rationale, he either reveals a shallow narcissism or a window into some of the Republican malfeasance that has crippled the conservative movement in America. But, heck, this is a golf magazine, not a political rag.

So here’s a suggestion, Mr. President. Drop the silly grandstanding and instead play the game with vets like Army Spec. Sean Lewis (pictured above). Golf has become a source of solace and therapy for many wounded soldiers and most would cherish a round with the first golfer. Make sure every round includes two vets until the real Mission is Accomplished.

If anyone has a problem with that, so what.

– Michael Keating

Superintendent’s Revenge

Talk about having a blast! This is such a fun tournament. The course superintendent places obstacles on the green, moves the tee boxes in interesting places and otherwise makes play a challenge. It’s a captain’s choice scramble. Everyone hits their own ball. The best shot is chosen and everyone else moves their ball to that position. Everyone hits their own ball again and the process is repeated until the ball is holed.

The below photos will show all of the obstacles we had to contend with. All of the tee boxes were in the rough where placing even a tall tee swallowed your ball. It wasn’t high enough to give you a clear shot at it. The tall grass got in the way. One of the ladies tees actually had tee markers on them…but they were placed all the way in the back and it was on a par 5 that was one of our longest.

Some of the challenges I didn’t photograph were pin placements. Without seeing the entire green, the photos would not have shown how dastardly the putts were. One was at the top of a hill…if you didn’t sink the putt, your ball ran back down the hill.

Another was at the bottom of a hill so if it didn’t go it, it continued on it’s trip off the green. It made for precision putting.

For the 18th hole, which is a par 3, the superintendent hit the first shot. Wherever it landed was where we hit from. We started at the back of the green, just off the green. We started with a putt. Of course, it was down hill and a very tough placement. We should have birdied it…but we all missed the second shot and it flew past the hole. We didn’t quite nail that first putt. We did par it.

All in all, we had a blast. We came in at 72 -par. Unfortunately, another foursome in our flight also had a 72 so the pros did a scorecard runoff. Not sure how they did it, but they usually start with the #1 handicap hole and continue down the card by handicap, until a winner is determined.

Coming in second isn’t so bad. We get a little money added to our accounts, so it’s good for purchases in the pro shop. Works for me since you can’t have enough golf clothing :)

LAW 9: Palm trees eat golf balls. So do all other trees.

To view the diabolical obstacles we had to maneuver through, check out my pictures:

Many holes that had interesting tee box placements also had these foam plugs to make the holes smaller. You had to be right on to sink a putt with these inserts.

This hole, besides having a practice tee flag which is only about 3 feet, if that much, is off the green. The good news is that the fringe could help if you hit the ball too far. We didn't need it :-)

Another Pretty Golf Day!

An old friend drove out to play golf with me today.  It was a glorious day for golf and we had a wonderful time. Did I play well…..????? Naw….SOS DD, but we had a great time.

My short game, my pitching and chipping have abandoned me and my putting is getting worse instead of better. Today my eyes were definitely crooked…more so than usual. In fact, it’s even possible the right eye was in the left socket and vice versa…that’s how bad it was.

Tomorrow is another day to excel, so hopefully, something will start clicking. The good news is it’s a scramble so even if i do crappy, I have 3 other teammates to lend a hand. This will be a fun tourney and I’m going to try to take some pictures so you can see how very ridiculous it can be.

LAW 8: Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man (or woman).
